What is an AI live tutor? How it works and how to pick one
Short on time? Summarize this with ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity.
An AI live tutor is an AI you learn with in real time. Instead of reading a reply, you hear the explanation, watch the working appear, and answer or ask questions as you go. It's the difference between reading a textbook and sitting next to someone who's good at the subject.
We make StudyPrime, which has an AI live tutor, so the examples here come from building one.
How an AI live tutor works
There are four parts, and the good ones make them feel like one thing.
- A teaching brain. It plans the lesson one small step at a time, and it decides when to stop and ask you something.
- A voice. It speaks the reasons out loud, so your eyes are free to follow the working.
- A board. The steps, pictures and graphs appear as they're mentioned. Timing matters: a circle should land on the exact word being spoken.
- Ears. It listens to your answers and questions, including when you cut in mid-sentence.
AI live tutor vs chatbot
| Chatbot | AI live tutor | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A block of text | A voice with the working on a board |
| Who does the thinking | Often the chatbot | You, with hints |
| When you're confused | You type a new message | You say so, and it stops and changes course |
| Pace | All at once | One step at a time |
AI live tutor vs a human tutor
A good human tutor knows you, notices when you've gone quiet, and can keep you motivated. An AI live tutor can't fully match that. What it can do is be there at midnight before a test, explain the same thing five different ways without sighing, and cost a small part of what an hour with a person costs. Your teacher still matters most. A live tutor helps you in the hours between classes.
What to check before you pick one
- Does it make you answer? If it talks for two minutes and gives you the result, it's a video, not a tutor.
- Can you interrupt it? Try cutting in halfway through a sentence. It should stop and deal with what you said.
- What happens when you're wrong? It should work out why you got it wrong, not just repeat itself.
- Does the board keep up with the voice? The marker should be on the thing it's talking about.
- Can it use your own work? A photo of your homework or your own notes beats a generic lesson.
How to get the most from one
- Answer before it tells you, even if you're guessing. A wrong guess makes the right answer stick.
- Say when you're lost straight away. That's the whole point of a live tutor.
- Finish by doing one problem on your own with no help.
